Department of Chemical Engineering Holds the 2025 Graduation Ceremony

On the morning of June 20, the 2025 graduation ceremony for the Department of Chemical Engineering at Tsinghua University was held.Attendees included Academician Yang Wantai of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Professor Zhang Qiang, Dean of the Department of Chemical Engineering,Professor Lu Yangcheng, Secretary of the Party Committee, heads of various research institutes and laboratories, faculty representatives, counselors, as well as nearly 200 graduates and their family members. The ceremony was hosted by Professor Lu Yuan.

The ceremony opened with graduation videos for undergraduate and graduate students. The videos traced students’ journeys in the academic and cultural landscape of Tsinghua, illustrating how they explored their direction, overcame challenges, and reached new heights of growth. Through scenes spanning classrooms, laboratories, and field practice, the videos showcased the stories of Tsinghua chemical engineers who pursue their ideals with courage and perseverance. Faculty members also appeared in the videos to offer heartfelt messages, encouraging graduates to move forward with determination and pursue their dreams in the next stage of life.

 

Student Performances

Six students—including doctoral graduates Sun Mingze and Shen Yiming, undergraduate graduates Luo Qiaoli from the Department of Chemical Engineering, and Fu Jin, Ning Aiyi, and Zhao Qiyue from the Tanwei Academy—performed songs for the ceremony. They presented flowers to the faculty to express their gratitude for the teachers’ dedication and guidance.

Professor Lu Yangcheng then presented an overview of the 2025 graduating class. Professor Liu Zheng and Professor Luo Guangsheng announced the lists of honored undergraduate and graduate students. Awards presented included Beijing Outstanding Graduates, Tsinghua University Outstanding Graduates, Tsinghua University Merit Graduates, Tsinghua University Outstanding Theses, Department Outstanding Theses, Tsinghua Outstanding Doctoral Graduates, Tsinghua Outstanding Master’s Graduates, and the Tsinghua University Graduate Commencement Award. Professors Yang Wantai, Lu Yangcheng, Zhang Qiang, Luo Guangsheng, Liu Zheng, and Zhu Bing presented the awards to the honorees.

Zhang Enze of Class Chemical Engineering 13 and Fu Jin of the Tanwei Academy delivered speeches on behalf of the undergraduate graduates. Zhang Enze reflected on his four years at Tsinghua, expressing gratitude for the department’s strong academic and moral training, and stated his commitment to embracing challenges and serving the nation with the spirit of a Tsinghua chemical engineer. Fu Jin shared personal reflections on growth from enrollment to graduation, thanking faculty and classmates for their support, and expressed her determination to uphold the Chemical Engineering spirit of “reaching for the heights and standing firm on the ground,” striving for excellence and contributing to society.

Huang Longqun, representing the master’s graduates, spoke about the meaning of “representation” and reflected on her journey from her hometown in Guizhou to Tsinghua and then to Japan for exchange studies. She said that the Tsinghua spirit of “self-discipline and social responsibility” and the departmental tradition of “starting with myself, starting now” had guided students in building resilience and finding direction. She shared that she would return to Guizhou as a selected civil servant, contributing to local development and carrying forward Tsinghua’s sense of duty and commitment.

Professor Xie Xin, a doctoral graduate from the Class of 2020, spoke on behalf of the doctoral graduates. He reflected on the challenges and achievements of his doctoral studies and expressed gratitude for the guidance of mentors and support from peers. He stated that the department’s traditions and its deep-rooted patriotism had always motivated students to pursue excellence. Looking ahead, he said graduates would inherit the spirit of “bravery in tackling challenges and commitment to truth,” contributing to major national scientific and technological endeavors and “writing their dissertations on the motherland’s soil.”

Professor Liu Kai, speaking on behalf of the faculty, delivered heartfelt remarks to the graduates. He congratulated the students and recalled their academic and research journey together. He emphasized that chemical engineering is a discipline that stands tall and remains grounded—it requires exploring scientific frontiers in laboratories while solving real-world engineering problems in the field. He encouraged graduates to uphold a “clear mind,” “practical innovation,” and the “craftsmanship spirit,” to seize the opportunities of the new era, and to realize their value through contributing to the nation’s major needs.

 

Alumnus Zhu Binbin delivering remarks

Mr. Zhu Binbin, an expert in development planning in the petrochemical industry and a 2006 undergraduate and 2011 doctoral alumnus of the department, delivered remarks as an alumni representative. He recalled his years of study at Tsinghua and the spiritual foundation the university instilled in him. He shared insights from his work in petrochemical policy research and encouraged graduates to remember the promise of “starting with myself, starting now,” contributing their wisdom and strength to the high-quality development of China’s energy and chemical industries.

 

Address by Professor Zhang Qiang, Dean of the Department of Chemical Engineering

Professor Zhang Qiang extended warm congratulations and best wishes to the 2025 graduates on behalf of the entire department. Centering his remarks on the themes of “heritage,” “responsibility,” “transcendence,” and “departure,” he encouraged students to uphold the honorable traditions of Tsinghua Chemical Engineering, shoulder the mission of the times in the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, and carry the spirit of Tsinghua Chemical Engineering into the world. He urged them to become practitioners of “reaction engineering,” connectors of “transport phenomena,” and creators of “high-performance materials,” and to accelerate progress in the emerging field of “AI + Chemical Engineering.”

In addition, the department prepared personalized graduation gifts for each graduate, including custom-made mugs and commemorative night lamps. The mugs were printed with each student’s name, student ID, and the phrase “starting with myself, starting now, and shining wherever the Party and the people need me,” conveying the department’s sincere blessings and high expectations.
