卢元课题组研究的中心模式是利用工程学、生物学、化学、物理学、数学和计算机科学等多学科交叉手段操作生物大分子和复杂的生物网络。研究的焦点在于发展和应用世界最前沿的技术,突破天然生命体系的限制,快速改造生物分子机器、细胞和系统网络,以解决生物制造、人类健康等领域最具挑战性的工程难题。目前在PNAS、Small、ACS Synthetic Biology, Biotechnology for Biofuels、Bioresource Technology、Biotechnology and Bioengineering等杂志上已发表约60篇高影响学术杂志论文,相关科研工作被化学、生物学、医学、工程学多个研究领域广泛引用;同时被众多科学媒体如ScienceDaily、Phys.org、Reddit、FierceBiotech Research、RT Magazine和GEN News等广泛报导。同时也已发表40多篇国际国内会议论文,拥有5项国际授权专利、13项国内授权专利。参加的科研项目受到了重大项目机构的支持,包括我国973、863、自然科学基金、科技部重大专项,美国的NIH和GCEP基金,日本的文部科学省TSBMI项目基金等。
