2000年之前主要从事过程系统工程的理论和实践研究,近20年来在国内率先开展生态工业和循环经济的研究,将过程系统工程的理论方法与工业生态学相结合,拓展了过程系统工程和工业生态研究范畴,形成了生态工业的系统工程研究领域。在理论上开展了生态工业系统的分析和集成、复杂系统及其演变进化、循环经济等研究工作,提出了生态工业系统热力学分析、物质和元素代谢分析、循环经济系统集成、产业链构建和优化、多层面生命周期评价、生态工业决策、复杂系统理论研究等并成功地应用于实践,为我国生态工业和循环经济发展做了大量工作。主持完成100多项科研项目,完成的生态工业园区和循环经济发展规划等中26个列为各类国家级试点。2005年被评为教育部新世纪优秀人才,获国家教育部科技进步奖、国家生态环境部环境保护科学技术奖、中国循环经济协会科技奖、中石化科技进步奖、中国石化联合会科技进步奖、清华大学研究成果奖等10余次,发表学术论文400多篇,SCI/SSCI/EI收录160多篇,编写专著20余部。
