Dr. M. Grant NortonisProfessorin theSchoolofMechanicaland Materials Engineering atWashingtonStateUniversityand Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Programs in theCollegeofEngineeringand Architecture. Professor Norton obtained his PhD in Materials fromImperialCollege,Londonand spent a two-year postdoctoral atCornellUniversitybefore joining theWashingtonStateUniversityfaculty in 1991. In 2003 and 2004 he was an AFOSR Faculty Research Associate at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and spent the 1999/2000 academic year as a Visiting Professor atOxfordUniversity. From 2000 to 2005 Professor Norton was Chair of Materials Science atWashingtonStateUniversity. He is author or co-author of about 180 papers in the archival literature, several book chapters, and two textbooks, one on X-ray diffraction and most recentlyCeramic Materials: Science and Engineering, published by Springer. Professor Norton serves as Deputy Editor-in-Chief ofJournal of Materials Science,is on the International Editorial BoardJournal of Materials Education, and is on the Editorial Board ofJournal of Nanotechnology. The National Science Foundation, the Department of Homeland Security, Boeing Commercial Airplane Company, and REC Silicon are currently sponsoring Professor Norton’s research. Prior to entering academia, Norton worked for two major European multinationals. He has consulted for a number of companies and organizations, including an interesting project on the World War II memorial inWashingtonD.C., and he is an advisor to CH2MHill in the area of nanomaterials processing. In 2007, Norton formed GoNano Technologies, Inc., a university spin off company focused on alternative energy applications for nanomaterials. In 2009, Governor Christine Gregoire appointed Professor Norton to the Board of Directors of theWashingtonTechnologyCenter.

Dr. James Petersenhas served in a variety of research leadership capacities, including as WSU’s Vice Provost for Research, and as the Interim Executive Director of the Inland Northwest Research Alliance. In 2008, he returned from central administration to his academic roots, articulated a vision for the School, and worked with an alumnus to secure the largest donation from an individual in WSU’s history. While serving as Vice Provost for Research, the institution’s principal research officer, he oversaw significant growth in the institution’s sponsored research activities, while also enhancing responsible conduct of research and enhancing collaborations with other research institutions. While a faculty member, he served as the PI for WSU’s first Integrative Graduate Education and Research Training (IGERT) grant, which was responsible for educating some 40 science and engineering PhD students, nearly 200 undergraduate researchers, and several high school teachers. His research, which has been funded by the Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation, and other organizations, has focused on the kinetics of biologically mediated, environmentally significant chemical reactions, the design of in situ bioremediation systems, and the design of transformational energy processing systems. His work has always been collaborative in nature, and he has concentrated on developing such collaborations and on the education of graduate students associated with his research.
