Catalysis Driven by “Nanoenzymes” or Functional Assemblies in Nanoscale or Supramolecular Structures

Itamar Willner

Institute of Chemistry, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, 91904 Jerusalem, Israel

The introduction of new catalysts and the control over the switchable and programmed functions of catalytic systems are key challenges in chemistry. Two new methods to develop catalysts will be introduced: (i) The application of heterogeneous nanoparticles as “nanoenzymes” that catalyze different transformations will be described. The surface modification of the nanoenzymes leading to switchable catalytic functions of nanoenzymes will be addressed. (ii) Catalytic units are conjugated to aptamer recognition sequences to yield a new class of DNA-based catalysts termed “nucleoapzymes”. Their application to catalyze different chemical transformations will be discussed. In addition, the control over the switchable functions of catalysts will be addressed by introducing two different concepts: (a) The use of origami DNA scaffolds for switchable catalysis. This will include the stimuli-triggered reconfiguration of origami-dimers that act as a switchable scaffold for the selective, dictated, operation of DNAzymes. (b) The application of DNA-based constitutional dynamic networks (CDNs) for programmed catalysis. The implications of these systems for the “evolution of life” will be presented.
