The First Tsinghua University Global Summer School on Green Biomanufacturing Successfully Concludes

DATE:2025-07-31

On July 28th, the Tsinghua University Global Summer School on Green Biomanufacturing successfully concluded at the Ying Shi Building. Jointly organized by the Key Lab of Industrial Biocatalysis, Ministry of Education, State Key Laboratory of Green Biomanufacturing and the Department of Chemical Engineering at Tsinghua University, the camp brought together outstanding students from seven countries: Greece, Switzerland, Morocco, Malaysia, Vietnam, Australia, and Pakistan. Over the course of nearly a month, participants embarked on an immersive transnational learning journey through academic exploration, research practice, and cultural exchange.

Opening Ceremony: Building a Platform for Cross-Cultural Exchange

The opening ceremony was held on July 2nd in Conference Room 201 of the Ying Shi Building. Prof. Li Chun, Director of the Key Lab of Industrial Biocatalysis and Director of the Institute of Biochemical Engineering, delivered a welcome address, warmly greeting the international students and introducing Tsinghua University's disciplinary strengths and research layout in green bio-manufacturing. Prof. Ge Jun, Deputy Director of the Key Lab of Industrial Biocatalysis and Head of the Summer Camp, detailed the schedule encompassing academic seminars, laboratory practice, and cultural experiences. Through self-introductions and in-depth discussions, participants selected their project topics based on personal research interests, laying a solid foundation for subsequent activities.

Academic Navigation: Frontier Lectures Solidify Research Foundations

During the camp, invited lectures were delivered by Prof. Li Chun, Prof. Ge Jun, Prof. Chen Guoqiang, and Associate Research Fellow Jiang Guoqiang. They provided in-depth analyses of cutting-edge technologies, research hotspots, and industrial applications within the field of green bio-manufacturing. These lectures systematically outlined the discipline's development trajectory, helped participants grasp core advancements, and provided a robust theoretical foundation for research practice.

Empowering Practice: Honing Research Skills in the Lab

Featuring "immersive research practice" as its hallmark, the camp offered five distinct project options. Guided one-on-one by Tsinghua graduate students acting as teaching assistants, participants delved into laboratory work, engaging in experimental design, operation, and data analysis. Through hands-on practice, they deepened their understanding of theoretical knowledge, cultivated scientific thinking, and enhanced their practical skills.

Cultural Immersion: Experiencing the Tsinghua Spirit and Chinese Charm

To help international students gain a deeper understanding of Tsinghua's history and Chinese culture, the camp meticulously organized visits to the Tsinghua University History Museum and campus exploration activities. Led by volunteer graduate students, participants learned about Tsinghua's century-long development and profoundly grasped the spirit embodied in the university motto: "Self-Discipline and Social Commitment." Additionally, participants visited Beijing's historical and cultural landmarks and sampled local cuisine during breaks from research. These cross-cultural interactions enhanced their understanding of Chinese society and culture, fostering strong friendships with faculty and students from the Department of Chemical Engineering.

Successful Conclusion: Sharing Achievements and Looking Ahead

On July 28th, during the closing ceremony, participants presented their project outcomes via PPT presentations, sharing their academic gains and cultural experiences at Tsinghua. In his concluding remarks, Prof. Li Chun commended the participants for their active involvement and outstanding performance, congratulating them on successfully completing all tasks. He encouraged the students to use the camp as a springboard to continue engaging with developments in green bio-manufacturing and to become bridges for international academic exchange.

This international summer camp was funded by the Chinese Government Scholarship International Summer Program. It received collaborative support from multiple Tsinghua University departments, including the International Affairs Office, International Students & Scholars Center, Student Community Center, Registration Center, Information Technology Center, and Sports Department. Organized and executed by faculty and students from the Department of Chemical Engineering, Key Lab of Industrial Biocatalysis, Ministry of Education and State Key Laboratory of Green Biomanufacturing, the camp successfully built a bridge for academic exchange and cultural mutual learning among international youth. It contributes significantly to fostering international cooperation and talent development in the field of green bio-manufacturing.
