Dr. Bing Zhu is Director of the Institute for Circular Economy at Tsinghua University and Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Tsinghua University. In addition, he is a Guest Research Scholar at Energy Program of International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Austria. Prof. Zhu graduated from Tsinghua University with Bachelor and Master Degrees in Engineering (Chemical Engineering) in 1990 and 1995, respectively, and received his Doctoral Degree in Engineering (Industrial Engineering and Management) in 2000 from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan. Prof. Zhu is currently active in professional services such as Member of International Resource Panel (IRP) of United Nations Environment Programme, Member of Inter-Ministerial Panel of P. R. China on Circular Economy, Member of Advisory Panel of National Natural Sciences Foundation of China (NSFC) on Cooperation with International Organizations, Vice Chairman of Circular Economy Committee of Chinese Ecological Economics Society, Member of Technical Committee of Optimal Control of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC), Editorial Board Members of international journal "Technology in Society" and Chinese Journals "Chemical Industry", "Green Petroleum and Petrochemicals" and "Coal Processing & Comprehensive Utilization." Prof. Zhu's research interests include natural resource management, circular economy assessment, industrial ecology, and chemical and energy techno-economics. As the Principle Investigator, his researches have been funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation, and others. In 2008-2016, Prof. Zhu was appointed by the National Development and Reform Commission of China (NDRC) and Ministry of Science and Technology of China (MOST) to serve as the scientific coordinator of two NDRC-MOST joint research programs on circular economy, namely "Researches and Demonstrations of Key Technologies on Decision Support and System Construction for Circular Economy" (2008-2011) and "Researches and Demonstrations of Key Technologies on Regional Circular Economy Development" (2012-2016) which were undertaken by more than 30 institutions. Prof. Zhu was also the scientific coordinator of two national pilot surveys in 2010 and 2012 on natural resource consumption jointly organized by NDRC and NBS (National Bureau of Statistics of China) and with more than 930,00 enterprises involved. In 2016, Prof. Zhu received a NSFC key international fund to work on accounting and application of material footprint of China's subnational regions from the perspective of Environmentally-Extended Multi-Regional Input-Output Analysis.
