  Biocatalysis engineering is the application of  
enzymesor whole cells in industrial processes to
produce commodity chemicals, specialty chemicals,
pharmaceuticals,novel biomaterials, and bioenergy
chemicals such as biodiesel. The rapid advance
in genomics research creates a huge and expanding
repertoire of enzymes as well as biosynthetic routes, while the advent of new tools
in enzyme engineering makes it possible to tailor these enzymes and routes for
industrial uses. At the interface of chemistry, biology and chemical engineering,
this exciting area of research has the potential to revolutionize the traditional
chemistry-related industries, and is vital to sustainable development. Our current
research includes directed evolution of biocatalysts, energy coupling in redox
reactions, process control and optimization at the molecular level, and bioenergy
production.
