  Center for Industrial Ecology
Eco-industry is a new industrial mode by imitating mass circulation in the natural ecosystem. In an eco-industrial system, processes are associated with each other by mass, energy and information flows. Waste from one process can be utilized as raw material for another process. Eco-industry pursues optimal utilization of resources, energy and investment by mass circulation from raw material, middle product, waste to product.
Center for Industrial Ecology in Department of Chemical Engineering, Tsinghua University was established in April, 2001, which is the first research center on eco-industrial theory and practice in China . The center's laboratory is the branch of united eco-industry key laboratory of State Environment Protection Administration (SEPA). The center is also a member of International Society of Industrial Ecology (ISIE), as well as the executing agency of Chinese Industrial Ecological Economy and Technology Committee.
Under the support of National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and 985 project of Tsinghua University , the center firstly explored theoretical study on industrial ecology and circular economy, combined the process systems engineering and chemical engineering theories, and eco-industrial system engineering field was formed. All these methods have been successfully applied into practice. The center has published more than 100 academic papers, in which more than 50 papers are embodied in SCI, EI or ISTP. In addition, a monograph “Eco-industry: Theory and Application” has been edited by the center and published. Secondly, the center has finished planning and study for 10 national or local eco-industrial parks and circular economy experimental projects, such as Study on Lubei Eco-industrial Model, Planning for Guiyang Phosphoric Chemical EIP, Planning for Fushun Coal Mining EIP et al. These projects are all high evaluated and bring great economic and environmental benefits in China . Besides, the center is undertaking some projects on development strategy for Chinese eco-industry and circular economy, supported by NSFC, National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and Ministry of Science and Technology of China.
