The department consists of five research divisions:

  • Polymer Science and Engineering
  • Reaction Engineering and Technology
  • Separation Science and Technology
  • Process System Engineering and Industrial Ecology
  • Biochemical Engineering

Our research aims are to develop advanced technologies and processes in chemical engineering, biotechnology, and polymer science and engineering, and to provide a strong basis for high quality teaching programs for students and professionals.

The department has one State Key Laboratory of Chemical Engineering, a branch of the United Industrial Ecology Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Environment Protection, Key Laboratory for Industrial Biocatalysis of the Ministry of Education, Beijing Key Laboratory of Green Chemical Reaction Engineering and Technology, Beijing Key Laboratory of Membrane Materials and Engineering, China-Brazil Center for Climate Change and Energy Technology Innovation, and Corporate Joint Research Centers that include the Cooperative Research Institute of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering with SINOPEC, Research Center for Bio-chemicals, Research Center for Special Cement Additives, Research Center for Glycans, and Research Center for Cyanogen Derivatives. The department is well equipped with a wide range of advanced research facilities, and has access to a university-wide state-of-the-art consortium of shared facilities generously funded and administered by the Ministry of Education. The university library provides excellent electronic resources for research and education, including online subscriptions to major scientific journals in science and engineering.

The department has programs with over twenty leading universities worldwide for academic exchange, staff training and research collaboration, and it has strong partnerships with major international corporations, domestic companies, and the local and central governments.

In the recent five years, the faculty has published over 2200 peer-reviewed research papers (including 900 SCI-indexed papers), received over 22 national and provincial research awards, 358 patents, 12 software copyright registration and 2 international patents. There has been a steady increase in research funding, which now include 74 grants from the competitive National Basic Research (973) program and National High Tech (863) program, and 119 grants from the Natural Science Foundation, 88 grants at the provincial and ministerial levels, 335 contracts from domestic industries, and 126 grants sponsored by international corporations. This has afforded the faculty significant capabilities to explore new ideas and develop advanced technologies at the forefront of chemical engineering. In recent years, the department has hosted a number of national and international conferences.
